The Festival in a Factory, Stoke-on-Trent takes place every June in the creative surroundings of the Emma Bridgewater Factory, a Victorian, canal-side pot bank that has manufactured Emma’s iconic handmade and hand decorated pottery for more than twenty years.

From author talks to family performances, from panel discussions to practical workshops, the Festival is an eclectic and inspiring celebration of culture and creativity with events taking place in surprising spaces from the old pottery warehouse to the cobbled courtyard.

Since the first event in 2014 the festival has:

• Welcomed over 10,000 visitors

• Held 80 author talks and expert panels - including talks from Alan Johnson, Mary Beard, Ed Balls, Sue Perkins, Nick Hornby, Kirstie Allsopp, Michael Palin, David Starkey and Edmund de Waal plus poetry events and children’s performances

• Offered free tickets for main events to schools and local colleges and held special events for local young people to meet with successful writers and experts

• Launched a successful Fringe programme in 2016

The 2018 Festival will be held on 7th, 8th and 9th June at the Emma Bridgewater Factory in Stoke-on-Trent and we are currently looking for a part-time Festival Programme Manager.

Festival objectives 2018

• To continue to bring great authors, artists, poets, historians, journalists, politicians and experts to the ‘Festival in a Factory’

• To introduce some new format events to this year’s festival – poetry, music, dance, participation

Role description

• A freelance, short-term contract to design, develop and deliver the programme for the 2018 Festival in a Factory, at the Emma Bridgewater Factory, Stoke-on-Trent

• This role will report to the Festival Trustees – Emma Bridgewater, Matthew Rice and Tristram Hunt


• Flexibly, around ½ to 1 day a week from November 2017 to June 2018

• Plus 4 half day meetings with the trustees in Stoke-on-Trent between November 2017 and June 2018

• The Festival Programme Manager will be expected to work full-time during the festival from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th June


• Research potential authors, events, activities and performers for the 2018 programme

• Work with the three festival trustees to plan the full festival programme for 2018

• Brief and update the Festival Manager and Events Team regularly

• Amend the festival programme if and when necessary and sign off changes with the trustees

• Plan the evening events where authors/artists are involved (the Emma Bridgewater team will make catering and venue plans)

• Brief all authors/contributors in advance of the festival (including briefing the trustees as necessary)

• Plan author introductions, management of Q&A sessions and book any interviewers required

• Confirm author arrival times and transport details to the Festival Manager

Skills and experience required

• Relevant arts festival programme management experience

• Experience of liaising with and briefing authors, agents and performers to confirm programming slots

• Excellent administration and organisation skills

• Enjoys working in a team - the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of fitting in well to a team made up of part-time people with other primary roles

• Experience of introducing events and performers would be an advantage


£6,500 (plus travel and accommodation expenses as necessary)

Front of House Supervisor

Stoke Retail area

Reporting to the Retail Manager, we are looking to recruit an engaging Front of House Café Supervisor, to assist visitors to our retail site and café in particular. You will meet and greet our visitors and ensure they are directed around our site accordingly. This role will be responsible for supervising the café team to ensure our customers receive an efficient service and will liaise with our Head Chef regarding any food service issues. You will also ensure our café is clean and welcoming to our visitors.

Proven previous Front of House and café experience is essential for this role, as is an ability to communicate with customers, advising them of offers and promotions around the retail site, or dealing with any issues they may have.

Familiarity of EPOS is also desirable.

These placements may involve time spent in our Offices, Shops, Warehouse or Factory, normally over a 3 day period.
