What is a B Corp?

Certified B Corps are a new kind of business that balance purpose and profit and are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, community, and the environment, as well as their shareholders.

Why is being a B Corp business important to Emma Bridgewater?

When Emma first set up her business, she knew she wanted it to sit right at the heart of the community – both in Stoke-on-Trent where she started making her pottery in the mid 1980s and in the homes of her many customers, in the UK and beyond.

Recently our attention has been drawn increasingly not just to what we do, but to how we do things and we’ve been looking for a way to assess our impact on the people and places we work, and the environment we work in. B Corp will help us to improve in a more holistic, credible, and consistent way across the business.

How does a business become a B Corp?

B Corps undergo a rigorous verification process across five key areas – governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. We scored best for our progress so far in the workers and environment sections thanks to the work we have done on introducing the Real Living Wage, and the recent recycling and energy improvements we’ve made.

What are we doing at Emma Bridgewater to continue to develop our B Corp score?

We’re determined to continue to work on our performance in every area and are particularly focusing on:

• Developing our people plan to improve communication and engagement across the business

• Improving our supply chain transparency for lifestyle product categories

• Setting carbon reduction targets
