Behind the Design: Lovebirds

Behind the Design: Lovebirds

Allow yourself to be transported back to a simpler age, when our most treasured possessions were handmade and passed lovingly down through the generations from mother to daughter. Imagine an embroidered patchwork quilt, a hand-sewn shawl, a needlepoint sampler. Pack them up in a hand-painted wooden traveling chest and jump onto a wagon bound for the New World west of Missouri.

It is on these dusty wagon trails that we have found inspiration for the old time motifs in our Lovebirds collection.

Inspired by simple folk art designs found on furniture, homeware and textiles brought across the Atlantic by Nineteenth Century European settlers, Lovebirds is sweet yet strong, romantic yet resilient, and spreads a timeless message of love, hope and courage. New to the collection this season is our hare motif, an animal often associated with new beginnings and one which will combine beautifully with our bird and pink heart patterns. And harking back to our own origins, the entire collection is decorated using our original spongeware technique, proving that the old ways are often the best ways and are with us still.

This season our design team trialled many creative ways to bring new life to our Lovebirds pattern. They used cut-outs to visualise the way the pattern would work across some of our newer lifestyle pieces, and continued to test different combinations of spongeware designs in our Stoke-on-Trent factory.
