What Is Creamware Pottery?

What Is Creamware Pottery?

Ever wondered why, unlike other modern ceramic brands, Emma Bridgewater handmade pottery isn’t bright white?

Instead, every mug, jug, bowl and plate has a pale cream background that’s typical of the pottery originally developed in Staffordshire, England. It’s a tradition we’re proud to continue today at our Victorian factory in Stoke-on-Trent; the historic area of Staffordshire now known as ‘The Potteries’.

Warm, welcoming and practical, this creamy colour gives Emma Bridgewater pottery its distinctive character. It’s also the perfect backdrop for our hand-decorated patterns. So how and why did British creamware come about? It’s helpful to delve into Staffordshire pottery history and see why pottery has been part of life for generations.
