Here’s to the things worth slowing down for.

There’s something about autumn that makes you notice things again, perhaps it’s because autumn brings us back to the rituals we know by heart. Recipes made every year, traditions passed down, the pleasure of making (with your own hands) and setting the table for a feast with people you love.

When life feels busy, these simple things have a way of grounding us. Making, gathering, sharing, noticing. Taking the time to make an ordinary day feel a little more special.

So, here’s to autumn. To memories old and new, to full tables and long lunches, to
something warm in the oven, and to the rituals that bring us together.

Three very good excuses for a new mug...

Pumpkin Spice Latte

1 espresso shot, or 50ml strong coffee

150ml milk

1 tbsp pumpkin spice syrup

Whipped cream, to serve

Ground cinnamon, to finish

Method
Warm and froth the milk until creamy. Pour the coffee into your favourite mug and stir in the pumpkin spice syrup. Top with the warm milk, a generous swirl of whipped cream and a little dusting of cinnamon.

Fancy making your own pumpkin spice syrup?
Simmer 50ml water, 50g brown sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground ginger, a pinch of nutmeg and a pinch of cloves for 5 minutes. Leave to cool, then keep in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Spiced Apple Tea

400ml water

1 apple, thinly sliced

2 black tea bags

1 cinnamon stick, 2–3 cloves, 1 star anise

1 tsp honey, or to taste

Slice of lemon

Method
Put the apple, cinnamon, cloves and star anise into a saucepan with the water. Bring gently to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the tea bags and steep for 3–4 minutes. Strain into mugs and sweeten with honey. Finish with a squeeze of lemon.

Blackberry & Apple Cordial

300g blackberries

2 apples, chopped

150g caster sugar

Juice of 1 lemon

500ml water

Method
Put the blackberries, apples and water into a saucepan and simmer gently for 15–20 minutes, until the fruit is very soft. Strain through a fine sieve, pressing the fruit gently to extract the juice. Return the liquid to the pan with the sugar and lemon juice. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then simmer for 5 minutes.

Cool and pour into a sterilised bottle. Store in the fridge. To serve, dilute with still or sparkling water.
