Our new Emma Bridgewater x Peter Rabbit™ collection is rooted in Beatrix Potter's original artwork, so who better to tell its story than our Head of Design, Sophie Gilmour?

We caught up with Sophie to hear about the research behind the collection, including a very special visit to the Beatrix Potter archives at the V&A. From handling original artwork and paintings to discovering unexpected treasures, Sophie shares the inspiration behind the collection and the journey from archive sketches to our spongeware pottery.

Your range is inspired from Beatrix’s own stencils and painting book, did you visit the archives as part of your investigation?

Yes we did! The pieces we saw at the V&A were wonderful. The Design team are huge fans of Beatrix Potter and the V&A so the opportunity to see behinds the scenes AND handle some precious artwork was a dream come true!

We went on one of the hottest days of the year which made it even more memorable, but the pieces Sara the curator chose for us to view were fabulous. My favourites were the tiles, and also the red slippers - the packaging log box is INCREDIBLE! We tried to make a replica but sadly it wasnt the right shape to protect the pottery.

Were they any specific details you personally wanted to incorporate, and how have you made it feel new and exciting?

The similarities between Beatrix Potter and Emma Bridgewater are striking; both female, founder lead with a strong history of supporting the British Countryside and the manufacturing businesses within so it is a natural collaboration. EB is a HUGE fan of Beatrix Potter and has referenced her many times over the years.

Whenever we start a new design we always look to the real, what is growing at that time of year, what creatures live in specific habitats etc. This was all second nature to Beatrix Potter and is for us too. It has been lovely looking at the world through Beatrix lens and adapting it to an Emma Bridgewater sponge design, what a incredible opportunity and hopefully one people love for years to come!

Peter Rabbit Inspired™ Carrot Cake

While Peter may have found himself in a spot of trouble for sneaking carrots from Mr McGregor’s patch, we think he’d happily tuck into a slice of this instead...
